The 6 Commandments of Organizing
1. Thou shalt not transfer clutter - what to do with clutter?
Don’t bury the dresser top to save the coffee table.
Keep surfi (all surfaces) clear for actual use.
Categorize things according to “like with like”.
2. Have a place for nothing - some things just don’t belong but they need a home, too.
Create an empty cabinet, shelf or drawer in each room (or in one place in the home).
All broken or random pieces from around the house can live here.
Keep a few (seriously only 1 of each thing) office supplies and quick tools here.
3. Keep it where you use it - a home for everything and everything in its place.
Stash toner with the printer.
TP (only 2-3 rolls) under the bathroom sink.
King sheets in the King bedroom/Queen in Queen room, etc (this will change your life, I swear).
4. Doubles are trouble - do you really need more than one?
CostCo isn’t always your friend, why buy in bulk for everything?
You don’t need two can openers or five tweezers.
Donate! It’s in a better place and doing some good.
5. Make labels, not war - no more “where is my…?
Mark shelves, bins and boxes so your family (and houseguests) know where everything goes.
It makes your home “stupid proof” (No offense, Dudes).
Label private things under a code name so kids/staff don’t want to look in there (eg: “medical” or a book or song name).
6. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start all over again - organizing is a circle.
Organization takes many layers - it’s never a straight line.
You don’t need to be OCD to keep your home in order.
Try to go room by room and then come back for another round next quarter.
